Tours in Dedoplistskaro

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Dedoplistskaro and Kakheti outstanding destinations for European travelers in Georgia?
Dedoplistskaro is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where 30% of the municipality's area is covered by protected territories. It is a unique region in Kakheti where semi-desert landscapes, Iori floodplain forests, ancient fortresses, and centuries-old Qvevri winemaking traditions merge. Dedoplistskaro is often called the "model of small Georgia" because it brings together the rich ethnographic and culinary diversity of populations resettled from various parts of the country.
What is the best season to travel to Dedoplistskaro and Vashlovani National Park?
Traveling to Dedoplistskaro is possible in all four seasons. However, the best period for eco-tours and visiting Vashlovani National Park is spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November). April and October are ideal for birdwatching enthusiasts, while April-May is perfect for viewing endemic plants (Eichler's tulip, Georgian iris). In autumn, visitors can enjoy the grape harvest (Rtveli) and colorful landscapes.

What documents and permits are required for tours in Vashlovani, Chachuna, and other border zones?
Since Vashlovani National Park, Chachuna Managed Reserve, and specific sites (Mijnisure, Takhti-Tepha mud volcanoes) are located in the border zone, you must carry a passport or an official ID card. A special permit is required for movement in the border area, and "Dedoplistour" fully assists its guests in obtaining it promptly. Additionally, please note that starting in 2026, health and accident insurance is mandatory for all foreign tourists entering Georgia (with a minimum coverage limit of no less than 30,000 GEL).
Is a high-clearance (4x4) vehicle mandatory for Vashlovani National Park and Takhti-Tepha?
Most of the region's cultural attractions can be reached by regular passenger cars. However, moving within the Vashlovani Reserve, Chachuna Reserve, and Takhti-Tepha/Khila-Kupra mud volcanoes is only possible with high-clearance (4x4) transport. "Dedoplistour" provides technically sound 4x4 jeeps and experienced local drivers, which guarantees your safety and comfort.
Is it possible to travel independently in protected areas using GPS or your own 4x4 car?
Mobile internet and GPS navigation applications (Google Maps) do not work properly in protected areas. Dirt road conditions change rapidly during bad weather, and road signs are limited. For safety reasons, "Dedoplistour" strongly recommends using the services of an experienced local guide and driver to avoid getting lost or violating border regulations.
What happens during the tour in case of bad weather or rain?
Safety is our top priority of "Dedoplistour". During heavy rain, dirt roads become impassable, which is why certain locations such as the Takhti-Tepha volcanoes or deep parts of Vashlovani are temporarily removed from the route. In such force majeure situations, "Dedoplistour" offers guests an equivalent alternative cultural-ethnographic program (fortresses, museums, family wine cellars, and culinary masterclasses).
